Intersections can be difficult to negotiate for anyone who’s behind the wheel, particularly when it comes to making the judgment of whether turning left and across oncoming traffic is a safe maneuver at the time. Such a decision requires attention and judgment of the speed of any oncoming vehicles. Tragically, it appears that one area driver did not accurately estimate the speed of an oncoming vehicle, and it led to the death of his passenger in a collision.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“A 20-year-old Boca Raton man died Friday night when the car in which he was riding turned in front of a van west of the city, authorities said.
James Rugieri was pronounced dead at the scene at the intersection of Military Trail and Camino Real, said Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Rugieri was riding in a car driven by Paul Speizman, 28, of Boca Raton, about 8:30 p.m. near the intersection when Speizman turned left onto Camino Real in front of a van, she said.
The van smashed into the passenger side of the car, where Rugieri was sitting. Speizman and the driver of the van sustained minor injuries.”
It appears that authorities have determined that the driver of the car was at fault in this situation, as the article goes on to state that charges are pending against the driver.
