We posted last fall in regards to a bicyclist who was hit by an unknown driver and killed. At the time, it seemed as though police had little evidence to work with as they pursued the identity of the driver. However, as is often the case, the driver was eventually identified. Now comes word that the driver of the SUV in question was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.
According to the Sun-Sentinel:
“A 44-year-old Boca Raton woman was arrested in a September fatal hit and run case.
Loren Mark Clobes, 60, of Pompano Beach, was riding his bicycle about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 20 in the 8000 block of North Federal Highway in Boca Raton when he was hit by a Cadillac, police said.
Instead of stopping, the 2007 Cadillac Escalade driven by Tonya Meccariello, continued south, police said.
Clobes died at the scene.
An anonymous tipster called in information about the vehicle, which police say led to Meccariello.
Meccariello told detectives she didn’t know she hit someone.
“Awe man, something hit my headlight,” Meccariello told a friend after getting home and seeing the damage.”
Now that the driver has been apprehended, investigators and prosecutors can identify the causes of the crash and why the driver fled the scene.
